Dear Reader,
Your heart is one of the most important organs in your body, pumping an amazing number of times over a lifetime. Experts know that what you eat has an impact on the body, and naturally, the heart as well. Luckily dedicated research has been able to identify foods that are good for your heart... that make it stronger, healthier.
The good news is that there are lots of tasty options. Here's our first installment of 12 heart healthy foods that taste good and have been shown by research to do good for your heart...
1. Fresh herbs are great ways to replace salt, sugar and trans fats - all diet bad guys - because they're truly flavor powerhouses and are a natural source of many beneficial antioxidants.
2. Black beans are loaded with heart healthy nutrients like folate, antioxidants, magnesium and fiber.
3. Red wine (with resveratrol) is a heart healthy beverage that has two antioxidants you've heard about, resveratrol and catechins, both are thought to offer protection to artery walls. Alcohol is also known to boost HDL (good) cholesterol. Be sure not to exceed one glass a day for a woman, one to two for a man. Talk to you doctor as alcohol can cause problems for those taking aspirin.
4. Salmon is a top food for a healthy heart because it's naturally loaded with omega-3s EPA and DHA. The American Heart Association now suggests two servings of salmon (or another oily fish) each week to help protect your heart.
5. Tuna also is a natural source of good for your heart omega-3s and it's less expensive than salmon. Always go for tuna packed in water, not oil. Albacore (white) tuna has more omega-3s than other varieties.
6. Extra virgin olive oil, made form the first press of olives is naturally full of heart healthy antioxidants known as polyphenols and monounsaturated fats. When you rep0lace saturated fat with olive oil if can help bring down those cholesterol levels, and may also help protect blood vessels. Use it on salads, cooked veggies, with bread and try to buy cold pressed olive oil that you use within six months of purchase.

7. Walnuts in small amounts (1.5 ounces) each day may lower cholesterol and
bring down inflammation in heart arteries. Walnuts have lots of omega-3s, monounsaturated
fats and fiber. Replace chips, cookies and the like with these healthy snacks
and you'll do yourself, and your heart, a huge favor.
8. Almonds go perfectly with veggies, fish and chicken, and are a tasty addition to a dessert. This nut is loaded with plant sterols, fiber and the heart healthy fats. They might help bring down LDL (bad) cholesterol and the risk of diabetes, both good for the heart.
9. Edamame or green soybeans are going beyond the Japanese restaurants where they're served as an appetizer. They're natural sources of soy protein that can lower blood triglyceride levels and beneficial fiber. You can try frozen Edamame, boil it and then serve warm and in the pod.
10. Tofu is a great alternative to red meat as the main attraction in a meal that gives you all the heart healthy nutrients; fiber and polyunsaturated fats of soy, and you don't get the artery clogging saturated fats. Chop firm tofu, marinate and then either grill or stir-fry and easy on the oil.
11. Sweet potatoes are a satisfying healthy alternative to white potatoes for people who are worried about diabetes and want to eat healthier. They have a low glycemic index and don't bring a quick spike in blood sugar as well as lots of fiber, vitamin A and lycopene. Use cinnamon and lime juice to enhance the natural sweet taste of these spuds.
12. Blueberries are natural sources of a long list of healthy nutrients - anthocyanins as well as ellagic acid, beta-carotene, lutein, vitamin C, folate, magnesium, potassium and fiber. You can add them to cereal, pancake batter or yogurt, or puree a batch for a healthy, delicious dessert topping.
Some delicious options here. How many can you try in the next week?
To your good health,
Kirsten Whittaker
